Jaisalmer Fort The stunning city of Jaislamer is a picture perfect destination that utters magic and vibrancy of desert. It is often regarded as western senital to India. The hostile terrain of the amazing land notwithstanding the warmth and colour of people is simply overwhelming. One of the main draws of the city is daunting 12th century Jaislmer Fort. Yet another interesting aspect of the desert city is the numerous beautiful havelis built by the wealthy merchants.

The citadel is truly fantasy in the golden desert of Thar. Visitors can caress their eyes on the slope of shifting sand dunes while rambling their way in the Camel Safari. The reminiscence of the past glory of Jaisalmer can be seen in the golden fort of Trikuta Hill that dominates the horizon. Colorful festivals, vibrant bazaar, mouthwatering recipes and traditional hospitably makes the place a paradise for the tourist.

Major Attractions

Jaisalmer Fort:
Also known as Sonar Quila or The Golden Fort, Jaislmer fort rises from the sand and merges with the golden hues of the desert ambiance. The setting of sun in the colorful shades give a fairy tale appearance to the massive structure. This amazing bastion envelop a whole township that consists of the palace complex, the intricately carved havelis of rich merchants, several temples and the residential complexes of the armies and traders.

Nathmal Ji Ki Haveli:
This haveli was built in 19th century by two architect brothers, Hathi & Lulu. Interestingly, while one worked with the focus on the right side of the haveli, the other worked on the left. The result is the symphony that epitomizes the side-by-side symmetry of the building. Paintings in the miniature style dominates the wall of the haveli.

Desert National Park:
The national park is an excellent example of eco-system in Thar Desert. Sudarshini forest post acquaints the visitors with amazing land of wildlife, where survival is a struggle. The inhabitants include the blackbuck, chinkara, wolf, Indian fox, desert fox, hare and desert cat. The flights of sand-grouse start moving towards waterhole from sunrise onwards. You can also hear the morning call of the grey partridge. Bush quail and Indian rollers are commonly found in the Desert Park.

Gadsisar Lake:
The rain water conservation lake was built by Maharaja Gadh in 14th century. It served as main source of drinking water for the entire town of Jaisalmer. Today, the lake has become one of the most popular tourist destination of the city. There are many small temples and shrines around the Gaddisar Lake. Different species of water birds can be seen here especially in winters.

Jaisalmer stands as a desolate beauty of desert. It has been attracting visitors from all over the world to explore its architectural extravagance and vibrant culture. Some of the other major tourist destinations of the city include:

Jaisalmer is world-famous for embroidery, Rajasthani mirror work, rugs, blankets, antiques and old stone work. You can shop for tie-dye and variety of other fabrics at the Khadi Gramudyog Bhavan. The colorful baazars of the city flaunt a unique collection of handicrafts.

Night Life:
Camp for the night on the sand dunes and enjoy the indulgent performance by the local dance group or puppeteers. One can also enjoy late night rooftop dinner with a splendid picturesque view of the Haveli’s and illuminated Fort.

Every tourist at Jaisalmer gets his share of bite into the flavors that best suits his taste buds. The restaurants in the city offers varieties like peanut butters, pancakes with maple syrups as dishes for breakfast. The menu offers a list of inter-continental dishes with best of traditional Rajasthani specialties.

Travel Information

There are regular flights from Jaisalmer to Aurangabad via. Jodhpur and Udaipur.
Note: Kingfisher Airlines started Daily Air service from Jaisalmer to Aurangabad via Jodhpur, Udaipur.

Direct Trains are available from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur & Delhi via. Jodhpur-Jaipur-Alwar. Bikaner and Jaipur.

Deluxe & Ordinary buses of Rajasthan Roadways & Private companies operate from Jaisalmer to Jodhpur, Jaipur, Bikaner, Barmer, Mount Abu, Jalore, Ahmedabad etc, Roadways main bus stand is opp. Rly station & a bus terminal near State Bank of Bikaner and Jaipur Circle, Shiv Road.
