An impregnable well fortified city, Bharatpur was founded
by Maharaja Suraj Mal in 1733 AD. The name of town can be traced to Bharat,
the brother of lord Rama of Ayodhya whose other brother Laxman was given the
high place of family deity of the ruling family of Bharatpur. This town was
a once strong hold of jaats along with Deeg and Dholpur, who played a major
role in shaping the history of Rajasthan. They strongly opposed mighty
Mughals and later the British Rulers.
Bharatpur is also known as the Eastern Gate of Rajasthan. Apart from being
a great general, Suraj Mal was also a visionary engineer. He built numerous
palaces and forts that spree over the majestic land of the city. Bharatpur
is famous the world over for its Keoladeo Ghana National Park-
'Ornithologist's Paradise'.
